Passionate about her country and missing the many friends who have left, she now communicates with them using the internet. From a 10 bed retirement home, to an overcrowded 66 bed occupancy during the inflationary period of 2007 and 2008; to fair stability through the years of dollarization and on to recent times when occupancy has been much reduced but stable.
Arrangements can be made for residents accommodated in private rooms, who wish to have their own private nurse. Although originally intended as a geriatric home, at the discretion of the Board of Trustees, Edith Duly will consider under age persons who prove the need for nursing care or assistance. Residents have their own private rooms, receive three meals a day and care is provided by trained nurses and care givers. Although food and medicines are becoming more available, prices remain exorbitant due to the high foreign currency costs required to import goods.

Receiving no government subsidy, the home is funded entirely by residents’ charges, investments and donations from the local community and abroad, including WJR. Conditions in Zimbabwe necessitate regular trips over the border to stock up on locally unavailable food and medical supplies. They have the amazing support of an organisation known as ChaiSouthAfrica which supports old-age homes in Southern Africa. They have not only provided generous support but have offered themselves as a conduit for donations to Savyon. Bereavement support and counseling is provided where needed in the community without discrimination. All residents receive nursing care and full board and lodging which includes laundry service.
In addition to the regular nursing expectations, the Home ensures that all residents are made a fuss of on birthdays and monthly visits are made by the hairdresser, chiropodist and manicurist. Christmas and Easter are very special holidays at the Home - decorations go up and menus are in accordance with the season. Without this we would not be able to maintain the standards expected of the facility and the adequate care of its residents.

All residents are cared for by State Registered Nurses and in-house trained nurse aides on a 24 hour basis. In the intervening years, we have grown from a modest 18 bed geriatric home to 75 beds offering not only general care, but full frail care administration. Accommodations are in 4 to 6 bed male/female wards, semi private or private rooms, with or without en suite bathrooms and three double units to accommodate couples. Full boarding facilities are included in the fee structure as well as 24 hour nursing care and assistance.
In late 1986, with the help of a number of well wishers and especially, the Lions Cub of Matopos, a Convalescent Unit was opened. Patients are admitted to the Convalescent Unit, via their medical practitioner, for a period of up to one month. This interim assistance has proved invaluable for patients leaving hospital, but who are not yet ready to return home; and to families who have needed to reorganise their own home environment when a loved one has incurred a medical trauma. Other accommodation options are also available and we will be happy to give information on request. Married with three children and several dogs, she is a public figure at odds with the current government because of her refusal to simply punt their propaganda line.
